Unlike fictional pirates, Jang Bogo was real. In 9th-century Korea (Unified Silla period), he established a maritime empire called Cheonghaejin (Garrison of the Clear Sea). He dominated trade routes between Korea, China, and Japan, wiping out pirates to protect merchants. The allows Indian history buffs to appreciate East Asian naval history without language barriers.
