Developed at the Tohoku Research Station in Fujisaki, Japan , in the 1930s .

Contrary to popular belief, "Fugi" is not a Japanese term applied to turmeric. Instead, it is a lineage code used by a consortium of traditional farmers in the Eastern Ghats of India.
