As a standalone episode, Chapter One is uneven. It’s too frantic to be great satire and too silly to be great drama. The emotional beats land with a thud because we haven’t yet earned the right to feel sorry for Bojack. He’s just a jerk with money and a horse face.

The pilot establishes the visual language of the puns, the rhythm of the dialogue, and most importantly, the central, uncomfortable question that the entire series will spend six seasons trying to answer: Is Bojack Horseman a good person who does bad things, or a bad person who occasionally feels guilt?
